Ellen Douglas Powell Gray
Born: 1812
Died: September 13, 1862
From the inscription on her grave:
"Wife of Wm. H. Gray and daughter of Cuthbert Powell, Esq., departed this life in the 50th year of her age. 'All the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.' Job"
Married William on November 8, 1836 in Loudoun Co., Va.
Her father Cuthbert Powell was born in Alexandria, Va., to Col. Leven Powell and Sarah Harrison Powell. After serving as Mayor of Alexandria, he moved the family to Loudoun Co., which he represented in the 27th Congress. He died May 8, 1849 at his estate "Llangollen" in Loudoun. Her mother was Catherine Simms, daughter of Col. Charles Simms of Alexandria.
In the 1830 Census, he is living with her father Cuthbert in Leesburg, Va. Household included two white males under 10 years old, one age 10 to 16, one 16 to 18, one 18 to 26 and one over 45 as well as one white female under 10, one 10 to 16, one 16 to 26 , and one 26 to 45.
In 1850, she was living in Loudoun with her husband William, two daughters Francene and Catharine, and her sister Catherine Powell. In 1860, she was in Waterford with William, Catharine and son Arthur.
She was the second wife to William and may have been married to her brother Cuthbert Powell Jr. first.

Through marriage and her wide-ranging family, Ellen is related to almost a dozen people buried in St. James Cemetery.
