Conflicting information: Peters states that John died in 1873 while
Spears states that he was born about 1760. Suspect it was transposition
of 7 & 3.
There is a John Markland living in Frederic County, MD listed in the 1790
U.S. Census. Same person?
A John Markland served in the PA Continental Line enlisting as an Ensign
and rising to 1st Lt. by 1779 when he resigned his commission. This John
Markland looks to have stayed in PA, Philadelphia according to the
Census' and other data. I suspect that this is not a direct descendent
of Matthew.
