Please use at your discretion these records for the St. George's Episcopal Church (also known as Spesutia) Cemetery in Perryman, MD. I did not originally compile and/or type these records. I have scanned and OCRed them from a typed copy obtained at the Harford Co Historical Society, Harford Co, MD. The OCR process can entail errors (although I have proofread these pages), the same as the person who originally typed the listing.
The Historical Society's listing is undated--more recent burials are not included here.

on the right side this inscription‑
In memory of Sarah Rebecca Lewis, consort of John Clark Monk, who departed this life March the 20th Anno Domini 1854 aged 58 years and twelve days.
On top of the monument this inscription:
Sacred to the memory of Mary Minerva Monk, wife of William T. Lewis of the city of New Orleans, Louisana, who departed this life in that city 1837 aged 29 years. Her Bereaved consort wanted in his presence inscribed on this monument an unfading sketch of her character as they now stand forth fresh and beautiful in his memory. For it would be impossible even for him who knew her best to tell with what perfect propriety, refinement and effection she acted her part in the various relations and social life. Her most intimate acquaintances whose eyes were permitted early to pursue the unsullied page of tier life agree that in her character was realized a purity so high, so lovely, so divine, few could sufficiently admire and none could adequately describe it. Her heart was an unspotted mirror. No impure spirit dared to look into it or breathe upon, and through this she enjoyed sweet communion with her heavenly Father. The future world she contemplated with a degree of satisfaction and interest, which nothing but the high Christian faith can produce. Death was in her view, but the entrance, the gateway riot dark, but lighted by rays of sun of righteousness and to come to a better world above where happiness shall reign unalloyed an immortal where the dear ties of love and friendship never be sundered, whose bright and indeeming realities will receive for over inaccessible to the evil sin, sorrow and death.

St. George's Spesutia Cemetery Listing (text file opens in new window)

St. George's Spesutia Church, Perryman, Harford, MD, US

Notes: St. Georges Episcopal Church, also known as Spesutia Church, where our branch of the Pattersons were baptized and buried. Detailed church records exist going back to the 17th century, showing Pattersons as members of the church and vestry.

Harford County, Maryland was first discovered in 1608 by Captain John Smith of the Virginia Colony, when he made a fairly accurate map of the upper country and its islands and shores. About 1649, Colonel Nathaniel Utie came from Virginia to explore the upper bay region and find a place to settle, and was granted an island located a few hundred yards south of Havre de Grace. He named it Spesutie, using the Latin Spes-Utie, meaning Utie's Hope. The spelling was later changed to Spesutia as it is known today. When the Church of England became the established church of the Palatinate of Maryland, the first Vestry House was erected at Spesutie Parish on the property which belonged by grant to Col. Nathaniel Utie. In 1718, Spesutie Parish was divided into St. George's and St. John's Parishes, and the Spesutia Church of St. George's Parish was erected two miles away at Perryman, where it still stands today.
