- Hugh's wedding to Elizabeth Powell was performed by Rev. William Trail of the North of Ireland and is said to have been the first wedding in the county in which a Presbyterian minister officiated. "ye twenty first day of December, Anno Domini, one thousand six hundred eighty three." William Traile was one of the earliest Presbyterian ministers. He arrived in the Colonies shortly after Reverend Frances Makemie, founder of the Presbyterian Church in America. Some references suggest that the marriage was actually in 1693. POWELL FAMILY: E-mail: markfreeman@attbi.com does not mention the children named Stephen, Jane and William.

Hugh and Elizabeth Powell Tingle
The first settler bearing the surname Tingle, in what is now Worcester County, Maryland, would appear to be Hugh Tingle. He was ìimportedî into Maryland on April 26, 1669 by Christopher Rousby, who received 350 acres of land for his services. The ship, under the command of Thomas Pieghen, was named ìSupply.î
Hugh ìTengleî and Elizabeth Powell were married by Mr. Traile, Minister, on December 21, 1683. William Traile was one of the earliest Presbyterian ministers, arriving in the colonies shortly after Rev. Frances Makemie, founder of the Presbyterian Church in America. Elizabeth was the daughter of Walter and Margaret Berry Powell. Her father was a Quaker and ìone of the highest class of earliest settlers in Somerset Countyî .
The couple appear to have lived at first on part of a tract called ìPowellís Inclusion.î Powellís Inclusion was 256 acres, part of which was received by Elizabeth Powell Tingle under the will of her father, Walter Powell. On July 18 1693, Hugh purchased 200 acres called ìDumfreiseî from Thomas and Mary Fenwick for 4,000 pounds of tobacco. This farm was in the northeast part of what is now Worchester County near Fenwick Island. Hugh adopted the name Dumfeise for his plantation. Hugh also acquired 75 acres known as Hilliardís Discovery, 100 acres known as Parkerís Denial and 400 acres known as Scottish Plot, for a total of 903 acres.
Most, if not all, of Hughís lands were originally in Somerset County, Maryland. This part of Somerset County became part of Worcester County, Maryland in 1742. Upon the settlement of a boundary dispute settled by the Chancery Court of England and signed by King George III in 1769, nearly all of Hughís land became situated in Sussex County, Delaware.
Hugh Tingle made his will on April 28, 1723. It was probated on August 22, 1733. Elizabeth survived Hugh by 13 years. Her will was dated May 18, 1740 and was probated July 19, 1746.
Hugh and Elizabeth had eleven children:
1. Hugh Tingle, Jr. ba. 1683, m. Comfort Fassett, d. 1737.
2. John Tingle, b. 1/17/1683/84, m. Mary Margaret Rickards, d. 1/18/1737/38.
3. Samuel Tingle, b. 9/17/1684, m. Sarah Cobb, d. 1721.
4. Mary Tingle, b. 3/8/1684/85, m. Samuel Cobb, 1734.
5. Stephen Tingle, b. 5/21/1689
6. Jane Tingle, 7/19/1690.
7. William Tingle, b. 8/29/1692.
8. Margaret Tingle, m. Richard Hudson.
9. Sarah A. Tingle, ba. 1695, m. Charles Collins, d. 1734.
10. Elizabeth Tingle, ba. 1700, m. John Sauls, 1734.
11. Daniel Tingle, ba. 1704, m. Mary_____.
Samuel Tingle, son of Hugh and Elizabeth Powell Tingle, had two sons:
1. Samuel who was born about 1713/14 in Somerset County, Maryland and married Sarah whose maiden name is unknown, but may have been Ferrell, Farwell or Farlowe. They had at least five children whose names are unknown, and
2. Littleton who was born about 1714/15 in Somerset County, Maryland and married Margaret Smith. Littleton and Margaret had had four children: Samuel, John, Rhoda and Molly.
Littleton Tingle of Henry County, Kentucky probably descends from Samuel and Sarah.
Hugh's wife, Elizabeth, survived him by about thirteen years. Her will, dated the 18th of May 1740, was proven on the 19th of July 1746. Eight children were born to Hugh and Elizabeth Tingle as far as is known, all of whom are named in his will. Elizabeth's will:
To son Daniel, the tract of land called "Hiliard's Discovery", 75 acres, and another tract called "Powell's Inclusion", 128 acres; all her hogs, and a bed that is at his house; and he to be the executor. To Caleb Tingle, one great pot and hangers. To Mary Tingle, wife of Daniel, One chist and Hackell. To son Daniel, one cow and calf, one heffer, and one house colt. To dau., Mary, one pewter dish and tankard, one wulling wheel, one chist and one bed. To Mary Cobb, jun., one new wheel, and all the tesator's movables. Witnesses: Benjamin Davis, Richard Beddard.
