    • Sam Newman was a recruiting officer for the U. S. Navy during World War II. Key cities for him would be Akron and Cleveland, Ohio, Bowling Green, Kentucky, and Washington D.C. I know he was in Washington in the late 1940's or so, since I used to visit him in his office at HEW, where my mother also worked.

      Deceased Name: Dr. Samuel C. NewmanDr. Samuel C. Newman, 84, Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of Akron, died July 11, 1995.
      Dr. Newman was born Nov. 16, 1910 in Wilkinsburg, Pa. He received his B.A. degree at Pitt in 1931, his M.A. at Oberlin in 1934, and his Ph.D. at Ohio State in 1939. Dr. Newman taught sociology at Ohio State from 1934 to 1939, and the University of Louisville from 1939 to 1942. During World War II, he served 40 months in the Navy, after which he moved to Washington, D.C., and worked in the Vital Statistics Division of the U.S. Public Health Service as Chief of Marriage and Divorce Statistics for five years; also teaching part time at American University. Dr. Newman came to Akron in 1951 to accept a teaching assignment in sociology at the University of Akron, retiring early because of health problems in 1973. He had been active in many community organizations and professional groups. Dr. Newman was a member of the First Congregational Church and the Ecumenical Campus Ministry at the University of Akron.
      Preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, on July 3, 1995, he leaves special friends, Morgan and Janet McGuire.
      Funeral services at 11 a.m. Friday at the Dunn-Quigley, Ciriello & Carr Funeral Home, 811 Grant St., Akron, Rev. Dianne Shirey officiating, where friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time. Interment at Glendale Cemetery. For those who wish, memorials could be made to the Sociology Department, Olin Hall, the University of Akron, 44325-1905, or the First Congregational Church, 292 E. Market St., Akron 44308-2091.
