    • from Ancestral Portraits and Records, vol. 2, p. 666:
      The ancestor of this family, Thomas Hawkins, settled at Nominy, Westmoreland County, Va., and later removed to Maryland, where he purchased from Governor Thomas Green, 1650, Poplar Island, then containing a thousand acres.
      He married Elizabeth, the widow of Daniel Stipping,
      of Virginia, and died October 12, 1656. Thomas Hawkins and his wife Elizabeth had issue, two sons: Thomas II., died in 1677, leaving no male issue. The second son:
      COLONEL JOHN HAWKINS , of Queen Anne County, acquired extensive landed estates and was prominent in public affairs. In 1694 he was a County Commissioner for Talbot County, Justice of the Provincial Court of Maryland, 1698, and represented Queen Anne County in the Assembly, 1714 to 1717.
      A communion service of silver, presented by him to St. Paul's Church, Centreville, is still used in that church. The tankard bears the inscription: "The Gift of Colonel John Hawkins, 1717," while on the chalice is inscribed: "The Gift of Collonell John Hawkins of Chester River in Maryland 1716." Ernault Hawkins, the son of Colonel John, completed the service by the gift of a patten on which is inscribed: "The Gift of Ernault Hawkins."
      The first wife of John Hawkins was Frances, the daughter of Roger Gross, of Anne Arundel County.
      Their son John , by his first wife, Elizabeth , had three sons and two daughters.
      One son, Matthew, married, July 25, 1746, Frances, the daughter of James and Frances Gould.
      Their son, Matthew II., removed to Harford County, on the other side of the Bay, and died there 1813. He married Sarah , the daughter of Doctor William Bordley, of Chestertown.
      Their daughter, Elizabeth Bordley Hawkins, who died 1850, married, June 1, 1815, George Williams, of Baltimore.
