  • Notes
    • Cushing, Thomas, History of Allegheny County, pp. 610-660.
THOMAS ARMSTRONG HUNTER, nailer, Verona, was born in County Tyrone, Ireland, in 1835. His parents, James and Kate Hunter, died when he was small, and he was reared by his maternal grandfather, Armstrong. When fifteen years old he came to America, and was employed two years in a rolling-mill and nail-factory at Kittanning. In 1852 he went to Pittsburgh, and was employed for twenty years in the Duquesne Nail-works, during the last twelve years of which he was manager. In 1872 he went into the American Iron-works, where he has been foreman of the nail department for several years. In 1865 he bought a piece of ground near Verona, to which he moved his family four years later, and in 1872 he built the handsome residence he now occupies. He is a member of the Legion of Honor, and has always been a republican. In 1854 he married Sarah A. Porter, who was born in what is now Stowe township, daughter of James and Ann Porter, natives of Ireland. Mr. Hunter has nine children: William James, in Pittsburgh; John P., in Verona; George E., in Pittsburgh; Frank Milton, studying music in Florence, Italy; Thomas A., Albert, Sarah Mabel, Harry Homer and Maud Eugenie, at home. Olive Marion died when twenty-one years old, and Charles Edward and Norville died when less than a year old.

from Peculiarities of American Cities: Pittsburg
by Captain Willard Glazier -- 1885
      American Iron Works.
The American Iron Works employ two thousand five hundred hands, and cover seventeen acres. They have a coal mine at their back door, and an iron mine on Lake Superior, and they make any and every difficult iron thing the country requires. Nothing is too ponderous, nothing too delicate and exact, to be produced.

Nail Works. The nail works of the city are well worth seeing. In them a thousand nails a minute are manufactured, each nail being headed by a blow on cold iron. The noise arising from this work can only be described as deafening. In one nail factory two hundred different kinds of nails, tacks and brads are manufactured. The productions of these different factories and foundries amount in the aggregate to an almost incredible number and value, and embrace everything made of iron which can be used by man.

reared by maternal grandfather Armstrong in Ireland
