  • Notes
    • James and Martha had the piece of property on Elk Neck that had come down from the Collett,
then the Gouldsmith family. In 1718 they had it resurveyed, then about 1720 they built a house
now called "Quiet Lodge." It was two stories,20 by 40 feet, and built of bricks which had come
as ship ballast to the US. By the late 1770s the house was connected with early Methodism,
and was frequently mentioned in the journals of Francis Asbury, the first Methodist bishop in
the US. He stayed fourteen times there as an overnight guest between 1772 and 1777. Around
the front door are placed bricks with the Presbury family information on them. In 1799 the
house passed out of the family, and in 1917 the house was included in the land appropriated
into what is now the Aberdeen Proving Grounds. The house now serves as officers quarters,
and it thought to be the oldest quarters in the army. It is a national Historic Site.
