Another house that was constructed before the Civil War stands at 2971 Rectortown Road. [030-
5155-0020]. An 1838 deed transferred lots 19 and 20 to John Harding and Francis W. Powell,
merchants from William H. and Eliza Rector.
      39
The Rectors deeded two other lots (# 22 and 23)
to Powell in the same year. By 1846, $700 worth of improvements in the town of Rectortown are
charged to Francis Powell, a value that increases to $1000 by 1850. In 1870, William Powell, an
Alexandria resident is charged with $1,000 buildings on a lot in Rectortown that is "in the
possession of Denham." By 1874, the value of improvements decreases to $700. At some point
the ownership of the property was transferred to E. G. Denham, as subsequent transfers of
ownership until 1988 often refer to the parcel as "Denham". The property, however, actually left
Denham family ownership in 1889 and 1890 when it was transferred to Bedford Glascock.

Mosby's Rangers: A Record of the Operations of the Forty-third Battalion ...
      By James Joseph Williamson
      Published 1895
      R.B. Kenyon
      XXV.
      HEADQUARTERS CAVALRY BRIGADE,
      Falls Church, Va.,June 5, 1864.
      Lieut.-Col. J. H. TAYLOR,
Assistant Adjutant-Central and Chief of Staff :
COLONEL: I have the honor to report everything quiet in this
vicinity during the last 24 hours. Major Forbes returned with his
mounted party from Middleburg and Rector's Cross-Roads last night,
bringing 5 rebel hostages (Hamilton Rogers, Dr. Powell, Gurley R.
Hatcher, Noland, and Hooper). This party did not see a single guerrilla.
The dismounted party which acted with it met a squad of 5
rebels and wounded 2 of them, but they got off. This party has not yet
returned ; it was to bring in more hostages from above Dranesville.
The regular scouting party which was relieved this p. m. brought in
Fenton Beavers and the two Gunnells, of Mosby's command, who
have been making themselves very obnoxious recently as horse-
thieves. Beavers is the same man who feigned desertion from Mosby
some two months ago, and, after taking the amnesty oath and spying
about Alexandria and Vienna, returned to the enemy. These 3 men,
with two Bowies from Maryland and a man named Campbell, are the
party which, under orders from Mosby, seized Walters and Dr.
Lloyd. I think that these gentlemen will both be back within a day
      or two.
Very respectfully, your obedient servant, C. R.
      LOWELL, JR.,
Col. Second Massachusetts Cavalry, Contdg. Cav. Brig.

3 o'clock we were at Hatche's Mills. Searched the old man's house and took him prisoner. Returned to Middleburg and searched several houses. A few citizens were taken. Halted and cooked coffee some two miles below the town on the pike.
Eight o'clock we charged through Aldie. Stopped at Chantilla and cooked coffee (those who chose to). Reached camp by way of Vienna about dark.
