Perhaps nobody better epitomized the notion that life starts at retirement than SAGE luminary-extraordinaire Adrian Mayer. Not that there wasn't lots of life in the earlier years - fighting on the frontlines in World War II, providing support for his mother and sister, volunteering for decades for a children's reading program. But Adrian's life as a gay man really blossomed after he retired from the advertising world in the early 1980's. That's when he discovered SAGE, and found old and new friends and countless volunteer opportunities. Adrian made a big splash by appearing on the Sally Jesse Raphael TV program to talk about gay seniors - even family members who didn't know he was gay until then called to congratulate him! He went on to serve as president of the SAGE Board, was one of the first hosts of the SAGE Drop-In Center, and for many years was the editor of the SAGE newsletter. Adrian also was a frequent SAGE speaker, bringing his perspective as a gay senior to countless audiences at schools, senior centers and conferences.

Adrian passed away in June 2007. He will be sorely missed by all of his friends at SAGE. But the legacy he left and the inspiring examples he set will always be with us.
