Edith was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Naval Reserve in October 1943 and was trained at the Naval Medical Center in Bethesda . She served at the WAVES training center at Hunter College in the Bronx. She supervised nurses who conducted the physical exams for incoming WAVES. My father also remembers that she escorted groups of WAVES to their next posts around the country, sometimes requiring long train trips.
At the time of her induction into the Navy, Edith was medical supervisor of the New Rochelle NY public school system. She received a leave of absence in order to serve in the military. See http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~susanb/images/newspaper/edith_clippings.gif. Unfortunately I do not have the source of these two clippings. I had thought they were from the NY Times, but a search of the NYT archive does not retrieve them. They may have been from a New Rochelle newspaper. I have other clippings from the New Rochelle Standard Star and that seems like a good bet for these as well.
She was promoted to lieutenant commander during the war .
After her release from active duty, she continued to be active in the Naval Reserve. Her NY Times obit says that she was medical officer in a men's unit. My father and uncle remember that she attended weekly meetings, and generally stayed very active until her discharge from the reserve in 1956, when there was a retirement ceremony at Fort Schuyler.
