101 "John Kane was born between 1740-1750 in Ireland, according to Pennsylvania history books. Research of Allegheny and Beaver County censuses indicate John was 80-to-90 years old in 1830. Thus, his birth date can only be estimated in a 10 year span." "The Kain surname appears in County Armagh, Province of Ulster, northern Ireland, during the years our John emigrated. There is a good possibility that John came from Scottish stock, those same people transported by King James 1st to inhabit the Ulster lands of displaced Irish folk.
The Kain name was one of the ten most common in Ulster in the 1700's. And it is that race of "new" Irish we call the "Scots-Irish". Jordan's "Genealogical and Personal History of Beaver County, PA" mentions a tailor named John Kain who emigrated from Ireland with his unnamed wife and children "at a very early date", settling at Service Creek, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
As one researcher notes, "Why would a tailor settle in the wilderness?". Was John really a tanner, and not a tailor? John's grandsons were involved in the tannery business: Thomas , Joseph , and another unnamed grandson.
John Kain settled at the Service Creek Church and Raccoon Creek area in Moon Township, near Hookstown, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He purchased the land from John Bryan in 1793, which he farmed, later conveying land in 1806 to his sons, John Jr and George 1st. This beautiful hamlet lies nestled between rolling hills, rock cliffs, and ancient creek beds. By 1800 county lines had changed, and John's homestead in Allegheny County became part of Beaver County.
An interesting account of John Kain's troubles with the Service Creek Presbyterian Church in Moon Township, Pa, is recorded from 1822 to 1827. John appeared with his son George 1st, who was accused of fist fighting. But John became "so unbecoming and offensive" that he was suspended by the Session from sealing ordinances.
About a year later, John placed an ad in a Beaver County newspaper, announcing publicly that his second wife, Judith Carnagey, had left his house. Session ruled on John's "malevolent and unruly disposition" toward his then-deceased wife Judith, and John's refusal to express regret over same.
When John appeared at next Session with a new wife, probably Martha, the couple were admonished for neglecting previous publication of their marriage, and appointed to be intimated to the congregation. Nevertheless, John was appointed to regulate affairs of the congregations of Service and Raccoon Creek in [1804]!
John Kain died about age 88 or 89 in late 1837 to early 1838. No Pennsylvania death records were kept prior to 1893, except for a few between 1853 to 1855. A Beaver County Will Book, dated April, 1834, and the recording date of John's will in late February, 1838, give us an approximate death date."
